As you know, I am a big supporter of minimal food waste – no-waste, ideally – and I wrote about my approach on several occasions, including here. Home cooking-related tips for no waste are wonderful to learn and to share – but, what about restaurant food? Oftentimes, we foodies are invited to dine by local restaurants, who go above and beyond to make sure we try as much as possible from their menus. We end up with numerous plates of food, which we can’t finish in one sitting. What do you do in this situation?

My usual go-to options are either take the food home OR order less food, in the first place. I have no issues at all asking to take the leftovers home to eat the next day. As you know, I grew up with limited access to food. I am against waste with every fiber of my being, and I get very upset with myself on the rare occasions when I let food spoil – remembering how much I needed food as a child.

What do you do with the food you can’t finish at the restaurant? And what can we all do to make restaurants even more eco-friendly than they are now? Some changes have been made (see plastic straws) but I think a lot still needs to be accomplished (see the Styrofoam containers popular for taking food home)
Last but not least, anyone else excited about edible cutlery? I saw edible spoons at the Sirha Lyon Expo I attended back in January 2023, and I thought this was a neat idea for replacing single-use plastic cutlery offered by restaurants. It might not work for everyone and in all circumstances, but at least it provides excellent food for thought – and a tasty snack for the taste buds 🙂
What is your go-to method for avoiding food waste from restaurant meals? Let me know in the comments 🙂
