This past weekend, I came across a great deal on poppy seeds, but I resisted the urge to buy a lot for baking. Due to their high (healthy) oil content, nuts and seeds go rancid rather quickly, and you must exercise caution when it comes to bulk purchases. This consideration formed the basis of the present short article, which I am hoping you will find useful 🙂

In addition to buying nuts in shell, to begin with, the best ways to extend the life of nuts and seeds long-term is to refrigerate or to freeze them. I like to purchase small quantities and to split them in half – half to store in closed glass containers in the dark and cool basement, and half to store in the refrigerator or freezer.

Vacuum-sealing is also recommended sometimes for oxygen elimination and slowing down of the spoilage process, but the reviews of nut&seed vacuum-sealing I have read have been mixed, so I cannot vouch for it, for the time being.
I love nuts and seeds and I eat them on a daily basis – flax seeds and hemp seeds in my morning coffee (yes!), sunflower and pumpkin seeds with my cereal and as a snack, and plentiful raw peanuts as an afternoon indulgence. Over the years, I shared numerous posts on the nutritional benefits of nuts and seeds, as well as reviews of relevant brands. You are welcome to check out my latest review (of Jewels under the Kilt), which can be found here.
How do you store nuts and seeds to prolong their shelf life? Let me know in the comments 🙂
