I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream – especially in the summer 🙂
I turned my visit to Indianapolis to the Sweets & Snacks Expo into a mini-family vacation – and when you’re on vacation, treats are a must After doing some research on local ice cream parlors, I decided to take my family to Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream in Carmel, IN.
The story of Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream is enchanting: “In the summer heat of 1945, Alice Handel created the sweetest of legacies in Youngstown, Ohio. Using fresh fruit from her backyard garden and her own personal recipes, Alice lovingly made ice cream that quickly became a neighborhood favorite. Handel’s, and a commitment to quality, was born.
To this day, Handel’s upholds the traditions Alice started all those years ago. From making each batch fresh daily to using her original methods and recipes, we’re still sharing our homemade ice cream and serving the communities we love so much one scoop at a time. Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream has been made fresh daily at each store since 1945. We use an abundance of only the best ingredients available and are proud to be recognized as the #1 ice cream on the planet!”

With a vast menu featuring over 100 flavors of ice cream, sherbets and ices, we knew we were in for a treat. We tried the Cherry Vanilla (vanilla ice cream with whole maraschino cherries) and the Birthday Cake (yellow cake batter ice cream with blue icing ripple and sprinkles), served in chocolate hand-dipped waffle cones. Both ice creams were generous in size, enough to satisfy my family’s sweet tooth cravings.

“Creamy” and “milky” – these are the words I would use to describe Handel’s ice cream. I was excited to uncover a world of luscious, velvety goodness, each scoop a delicious, fine-tuned harmony in combination with the perfectly crunchy cones. My family and I savored these precious moments under the parasols as the sun was setting, with joyful hearts and plentiful excitement in the little ones’ eyes. Thank you for the amazing memories, Handel’s! We will definitely return.
